Much has been said in the media recently about
the wonder ful benefits of yoga for health and
wellbeing, but the last article at the NZ Herald
called my attention to the fact they mentioned
yoga in helping people recovering from injuries.
Apart from the unquestionable benefits of yoga
for the body and its systems, and the mind for the
equanimity of thoughts and actions that it brings,
yoga is an excellent complementar y tool for sports
people and the general population for preventing
and recovering from injuries. Spor ts people are
more and more turning to yoga in order to prevent
injuries. Mr. Iyengar, the yogi that brought yoga
to the West in the early 60s, star ted yoga to treat
himself for a serious kidney disease that almost
took his life in early age. He is now in his 90s
and still doing two hours of yoga daily except for
Sunday. That shows the wide spectrum of yoga
Because Iyengar yoga is done with focus on
alignment and precision, the poses are held a
bit longer, giving the student the oppor tunity
to obser ve his own body and understand it. I
personally practice with a special attention to the
breathing and teach it to my students as well. My
par ticular appreciation of Iyengar yoga is for its
therapeutic applications and the use of props that
allow ever yone to perform a yoga pose no matter
their level of strength and flexibility.
Iyengar yoga is a dynamic and sometimes
strong style of yoga, that addresses the student’s
individuality. I teach respecting people’s abilities
and their uniqueness according to Iyengar tradition,
although yoga is one. My message to the students
is to explore the pose and see what comes from
that. Being flexible or strong enough, is not the
focus. With time and practice, all comes together.
Yoga Essence Centre is the result of my passion
for yoga and how that can enhances people’s
lives physically, mentally and spiritually. The Yoga
Essence Centre is the culmination of this passion.
As you come through the front door and step in
you realise you are in a space conducive to yoga
and relaxation. As you go down the stairs you
are surprised by the space and tranquillity of it.
The yoga spirit permeates the room. You then find
the librar y and ver y interesting books on Yoga and
Ayur veda, Naturopathy and Buddhism. The books
are available for holders of concession cards. The
lounge right next to it is a place to read, have a
cup of tea and wait or relax. The yoga room is
illuminated by the natural light coming through the
huge windows facing Le Roys Bush.
Yoga Essence Centre is growing and for ming a
community of like minded people. The centre is a
beautiful example of a yoga community spirit.
My team, myself and the students welcome ever yone
and facilitate ever yones yoga experience that can
be real and enhances lives.
