It s a first for the Kumeu Show but it s
taken 90 years to get here! Thanks to the
efforts of New Zealand Young Farmers, the
Northern Region Fencing Competition will be
held on March 10.
Sparks are going to fly at the Kumeu
Showgrounds when teams from Auckland,
Kaipara and Whangerei, possibly joined by a
fourth from Helensville, duke it out to build
the dandiest fence out there.
The objective is to produce the best fence in
quality, appearance and mechanical
components in the given time of two hours.
There s a one-point penalty for every 15
minutes that teams go over the time limit.
There will also be a separate section for
teenagers where teams from Rodney College
and Kaipara College will slug it out for pole
The Fencing Competition is going to be one
of the highlights of the Kumeu Show just as
it is an integral part of New Zealand s farm-
ing tradition. The Norwest News asked a for-
mer participant what qualities are required of
Fencing is not for the weak hearted, Mike
Boler, the organiser says. It requires great
endurance and strength, and at the same
time you need to be focussed on the job.
Mike, who is a sheep and beef farmer as
well as a hay contractor, says the competition
is expected to be tough. The judges decision
will be based on different aspects of tech-
nique, aesthetics and quality.
The aim of the fencing competition is to
develop fencing skill in youth, especially
teens, and the next generation of farmers.
The emphasis is not only on being the
winning team but also learning valuable
skills from contractors and industry
specialists, Mike says.
Indeed, the skills learnt here could save
you money but also put money in your pocket
by contracting yourself.
Safety is a big deal this year and competi-
tors are going to be judged on safe practices.
There will also be a tug of war. The NZYF
Tug-of-War competition is a great way to get
in and support your Region, get to know
others and most of all have fun.
TIME: Afternoon, March 10
TO REGISTER: Call Mike on 09-4225591.
