BNZ Birkenhead lends a helping hand
to local charity
When the BNZ bank in Birkenhead
made the decision to use their `Closed
For Good’ day to support De Paul House,
their helping hands were gladly received
by as they provide accommodation for 9
families at any one time and assistance
to more than 140 vulnerable families
across the North Shore.
On May 8 BNZ branches around the
country shut their doors and staff spent
their day volunteering at a local not for
profit group of their choice.
The Birkenhead team, led by manager
Denise Fletcher, spent the day at the De
Paul House and tackled many important
tasks such as preparing a two bedroom
unit for a homeless family, helping at
playgroup, sorting and emptying the
donated clothing cupboard ready for
families, stocking the food bank and
preparing goods for a fundraising stall.
The team at De Paul House were
thrilled with the efforts of the bank
staff, who were all very enthusiastic
and willing, and achieved more than
was anticipated. Some BNZ staff even
promised to return and help again in
the not-so -distant future.
“ Most of the BNZ staff, although living
locally, were unaware of what happens
`behind the fence’ on Onewa Road.
Many expressed surprise at the level of
poverty and hardship that our families
are facing on a daily basis on the North
Shore,” Catherine McClintock, the
manager of De Paul House says.
Catherine adds that de Paul House
has experienced a 24 per cent increase
in enquiries for accommodation so far
this year, with many low income families
struggling to meet huge increases in
rental and living costs.
With the cold winter months upon
us there is an urgent need for more
clean, quality blankets, bedding and
towels. These can be delivered to
92 Onewa Road from 9am to 5pm,
Monday to Friday.
