Local Primary Schools
As a parent, you are responsible for making
many decisions for your child and some of the
most crucial choices concern their education!
Choosing the right school can have a big
impact on your child’s happiness, wellbeing and
It’s little wonder then, that this is a decision
that’s fraught with anxiety for many parents, so
how do you ensure you get it right?
Step one - assess your child’s needs
You should think about your own child’s
strengths and challenges and look for a school
that fits. After all, you know your son or daughter
better than anyone else does. All schools should
be welcoming to your child, but they are all
different in the ways they are run and provide
Step two - gather information about schools
If you were looking to buy a new car or home
appliance, you would talk to friends and family
and research your various options online.
Similarly, when investigating schools, you want
to find out as much information as possible about
the schools on your list:
* Read information on the school’s
* Read the school’s Education Review Office
(ERO) reports at www.ero.govt.nz
* Search the school directory by visiting
* Talk to other parents who already have
children at these schools
Step three - visit and observe schools
Contact the schools you are interested in and
make an appointment for a visit. If possible, tour
the schools during regular school hours and visit
a few classes. A good way to have your questions
answered is to schedule an appointment with
the school principal.
Principals and teachers are used to parents
asking questions about what their schools offer.
They’re keen for you to be involved in your child’s
learning because they know the more involved
you are, the more successful your child’s learning
is likely to be.
Questions you may want to ask include;
* What will the school do to ensure my child
feels safe, welcome and accepted?
* How will the school identify and work with
the things my child is interested in and good
* What does the school do if there is bullying?
* How does the school keep in touch with
parents and how will it keep me up-to-date
with information about my child’s progress?
More general issues to consider
Because of enrolment schemes and zoning you
may find that your choice of school is limited.
Having said this you are still free to apply to enrol
your child at any state school you choose - as
out of zone children can often enter a ballot for
unfilled places at a school.
For many parents, the schools in an area dictate
where they choose to buy or rent.
