offers practical experience for students on UCOL’s new
Postgraduate Diploma qualification in Clinical Exercise
UCOL and Manawatu health providers have collaborated in the
U-Kinetics Health and Wellness Centre in Grey St that enables people
to recover through exercise programmes while providing strong
education and research opportunities. Although U-Kinetics is based on
overseas examples, its joint approach makes it unique.
TBI Health is co-located within U-Kinetics, providing
multidisciplinary health services, including back pain management,
physiotherapy and vocational rehabilitation. On UCOL’s new
Postgraduate Diploma qualification in Clinical Exercise Physiology
you are involved in the daily running of the clinic and work alongside
TBI’s healthcare professionals. The students all have relevant degree
qualifications and are supervised by post-graduate qualified clinic staff.
The Academic Leader of UCOL’s Exercise and Sport Science
programmes, Dean Rankin, says this approach strongly links education
to health service delivery.
“The focus is on developing graduates with expertise and experience
working with clients with medical conditions and injuries,” he said.
“These graduates can go on to play an important role in the health of

Tauranga’s Tony Drake had always dreamed
of running his own wilderness adventure
business. After completing a month-long
intensive rafting course on the West Coast, that dream is
becoming a reality.
The 40-year-old graduated from Tai Poutini
Polytechnic’s (TPP) Award in Raft Guiding with a
Grade 2 Rafting qualification and New Zealand Raft
Rescue Workshop Certificate, and has now set up Kiwi
“I decided I didn’t want to be 20 years down the track
regretting every day that I wasn’t doing something I
love,” Tony said. “With a business, kids and bills to pay it
was great to be able to do a short block course that was
hands-on and included safety training,
“The instructors were very professional, experienced
raft guides and their level of training was outstanding.
Now that I have these rafting and safety qualifications my
plan is to develop the business over the next few years
and phase from one career to the other.”
New Zealand trained guides are popular overseas
because of their technical skills and the New Zealand
Rafting Association rescue courses are internationally
recognised. The next course starts in Greymouth on
October 29, 2012.
